The Smashing Pumpkins, an American alternative rock band, was formed in 1988 in Chicago, Illinois.
Lead vocalist and guitarist Billy Corgan met James Iha, a Japanese emigrant and guitarist, and they started playing their first compositions at a Polish bar in Chicago.
Later, the duo was joined by bassist D'arcy Wretzky, whose ancestors were Polish, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who replaced the drum machine that the band had been using previously.
In 1991, Corgan began a romantic relationship with Courtney Love, which ended during the recording of their debut album "Gish".
